The greatest value of the Szénás Hills comprises the grassland associations that hold rare plant species. Steep southern hillsides hold open dolomitic grasslands, while closed dolomitic grasslands are found on the cooler northern sides and Feathergrass steppe meadows on the hilltops.

In the hayfields and pastures created through deforestation a long time ago, species-rich secondary grassland communities, steppe meadows and dolomite grasslands developed. The biggest such area is the Big Szénás Hill, but there are also sizeable meadows at the foot of the Kutya-Hill. These grasslands provide habitat to such rare plant species as the endemic Onosma pseudarenaria or Iris arenaria.
