Forests

The valleys of the dolomite hills are occupied by closed forests. Besides the species the community is named after, the hornbeam-oak forests also contain beech, lime and ash trees. The most spectacular species of these forests is wild cherry. In spring, its individuals can be spotted even from across the valley, due to their white bloom. Visitors find these forests appealing, but conservationists with a critical eye note that all trees are the same age, and that dead trees are all but lacking. These are indications that the area has been under intensive forest management for a long time. There is hope that in a few decades a view like the following one will appear in many places: the log of the fallen, old beech tree provides habitat for a number of organisms, while in the gap where it once stood, young lime seedlings are racing towards the light.
